Abstract

Mathematics communication is an important aspect in learning math. The low ability in mathematics communication influence students? learning quality which effected to low students? achievement. It?s because mathematics communication is not only related with mathematics comprehension, but also related with problem solving ability. Conventional learning (Teacher Oriented) caused less chance for students to communicate mathematics idea or revealed their opinion. It become the background of study. Problem in this research was how students mathematics communication ability in mathematics major through cooperative learning method Think-Pair-Share model. The research purpose was to measure the mathematics communication ability level of students at grade VII-A MTs Negeri 1 Junior High School of Bangsal through cooperative learning method Think-Pair-Share model. Approach used in this research was interactive qualitative approach with case study method, which was a reasearch directed to collect data, take meaning, get comprehension from the case. Case didn't represent population and didn't mean to get conclusion from population. In this research, the researcher took 6 students as samples, two of students with low ability. Researcher did data analysis by giving description about situation researched in narrative elaboration. Study outcomes showed that mathematics communication ability in students of grade VII-A was on level 2, 3, and 4 from perspective of mathematics language usage. Then on level 2, 3, and 4 from perspective of mathematics representation usage, and on level 2, 3, and 4 from perspective of presentation clearness. While communication ability of students in written, students could understand mathematics idea and explain mathematics idea well, but notation/symbol usage often forgot by students.
