Abstract

This study is aimed to : (1) Describe the implementation of Dienes theory based gaming model on multiplication material in the second grade students of SDN IV Yosomulyo Banyuwangi; (2) Describe the increment of multiplication concept understanding after the implementation of Dienes theory based gaming model on the second grade students in SDN IV Yosomulyo Banyuwangi. This study is designed using collaborative Class Treatment Study (PTK) that consists of 2 cycles. Every cycle through 4 steps that is stated by Kurt Lewin; they are (1) planning, (2)acting, (3) observing, dan (4) reflecting. Subject treated is the second grade students of SDN IV Yosomulyo Banyuwangi by 44 students. Data of this study is obtained from test result, observation result and field notes. The result of this study is stated as follows: (1) The implementation of Dienes Theory based gaming model on multiplication material in the second grade students of SDN IV Yosomulyo Banyuwangi uses 5 steps of Dienes theory; they are : (a) free play; (b) games; (c) searching for communities; (d) representation; and (e) symbolism; (2) The implementation of Dienes theory based gaming model can increase the comprehension of multiplication concept that can be viewed from the percentage of students achievement as much as 34% from cycle I to cycle II. Suggestion from this study is stated as follows: (1) Learning by Dienes theory based gaming model that uses 5 steps of Dienes theory is feasible to be considered as alternative learning for multiplication concept because low class students in elementary school still like games; (2) For teachers, it is suggested to implement the Dienes theory based gaming model to increase the concept of multiplication for the second grade students. Furthermore, it is because this learning model can increase students? understanding in multiplication concept; (3) For further researcher that want to use Dienes theory based gaming model in multiplication material for the second grade students is suggested to: (a) Using concrete media in every cycle, (b) Using various concrete media in order to make student always in good situation, and (c) Limited students? activities without putting down their creativity to find the new knowledge in every step of game to manage time allocation.
