Adolescent problem appeared in line with tasks of growth steps. Problems mostly came to adult in this period were manifestation of stress. When the adolescent got stress (pressure), they would develop ways facing the problems namely Coping. This Coping Strategy consisted of three kinds based on its function, Problem-focused coping, Appraisal-focused coping, and Emotional-focused coping. Each individual developed different coping strategy. It resulted from many factors inside of individual, such as gender that then influenced individual self-adaptation as also became society hope concerned with gender role; namely masculine, feminine, androgen, and undifferentiated. Referred to the phenomenon, the writer was curious to find out if there is any difference of adolescent coping strategy (as Y variable) based on gender role (as X variable). This research hopefully able to give valuable information for adolescent, parents, teachers, therapist, educational counselor and any party who involved in handling adolescent on more competent gender role, that focused on usage of balance coping strategy. This study used quantitative approach. The research population consisted of Senior High School students in Kotamadya-Malang in which, based on sampling technique, covered 458 adolescents of 16 – 18 years old. The sampling technique used “cluster random sampling”. The data collection employed scale of Adolescent Coping Orientation for Problem Experience (A-COPE) to find out kinds of Coping Strategy and Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI) to find out gender role. The kind of research data was nominal data that was analyzed using Chi-Square (χ) technique to test the significance of difference on Y variable (coping strategy). Based on the analysis result of Chi-Square (χ), with value 17.08 (r empiric) above theoretical value (r table) in significance level 1% (16.8), it said that there is significant difference in adolescent coping strategy based on gender role. In general, adolescent with masculine gender tend to use Emotional-focused coping (9.0%), feminine gender tend to use Problem-focused coping (8.1%), androgen gender tend to use Problem-focused coping (10.9%) and Appraisal-focused coping (10.9), and undifferentiated gender tend to use Emotional-focused coping (13.8%).
