Abstract

Onion (Allium ascalonicum L.) or locally called as Brambang is one flagship vegetable product which has been developed by farmers intensively. This vegetables commodity included into non-substitute seasoning which functioned as spice and traditional medicine material. The average production growth of onion along 1989-2003 period is for 3.9% per year. Harvest areal development component (3.5%) gives more contribution to onion production compared with productivity component (0.4%). Onion is produced in 24 of 30 provinces in Indonesia. The main onion producer provinces (based on harvest areal width > 1,000 hectare per year) are North Sumatra, West Sumatra, West Java, Mid-Java, Jogja, East Java, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara and South Sulawesi. These nine provinces contribute 95.8% (Java gives 75% contribution) from total production of onion in Indonesia in 2003. Average onion consumption for 2004 is 4.56 kg/capita/year or 0.38 kg/capita/month (Dirjen Hortikultura [Directorate General of Horticulture], 2004). Estimation of domestic demand for that commodity in 2004 reached 915,550 tons (consumption = 795,264 tons; seeds, export, and industry = 119,286 tons). Onion (Allium Ascalonicum) is a horticulture commodity which has so many benefits and high economic value also attractive market prospect. Along these time onion culture is tried in seasonal, basically done in summer (April-October) so: The efforts to be reached in onion research are: (1) finding out the cost for onion farming; (2) finding out income and revenue for onion farming; (3) finding out improvement of onion farming; (4) finding out efficiency value for onion farming; Research is done in Torongrejo village Junrejo subdistrict Batu City. Region determination for this research is done purposively. Sampling is done by simple random sampling where random sampling is taken in random and all subjects are considered similar. Data taken are primary and secondary data. Primary data is collected directly from farmer and secondary data is from related institution and library source mentioned in references. Research method is quantitative descriptive, to analyze cost using formula TC=P.Q, income using formula π = TR – TC, and to analyze efficiency is using formula R/C Ratio=TR/TC. Income is aggregate between income received by onion farmer with total production spent by farmer. The average income of onion farmers in Torongrejo village for IDR 17,275,191 per hectare, with such amount, there found average R/C ratio per hectare 1.5 and to strengthen efficiency value of onion, it needs to find t count for 1.4 > t table for 1.3, which means the onion farming in Torongrejo village Junrejo subdistrict Batu City is efficient to be done.
