Abstract

Indonesia was noted as one of the fruit and vegetable suppliers for Singapore in 1980Â’s. However, in the last five years, there has been a significant decrease on Indonesia's contribution in supplying fruit and vegetables; it was indicated by Indonesia’s capability in contributing only less than 10% of Singaporean fruit and vegetables supply in 2010. Obviously, it reveals to an ironic situation considering the Indonesia’s great agronomic potential in tropical fruits and vegetables with, yet, the fact that the export of its vegetables is likely to decrease. This study aimed at investigating the vegetable export in Indonesia. It employed purposive design to determine the area of research. Further, Indonesia was set as the research location in consideration that it was acknowledged as one of the potential producers of vegetables and tropical fruits with export capability. This study used the time series data of vegetable and fruit export volume within a certain period of time. Moreover, the data were collected by using documentation method describing the documents or reports from relevant institutions to support the related input. Afterwards, the data were analyzed by descriptive quantitative method with descriptive statistics as applied in presentation. The finding showed that Indonesia’s vegetable export experienced increases and decreases with particular commodities. Onions, red pepper, cayenne pepper, cabbage, potatoes, and tomatoes are the investigated commodities experiencing the unstable and unpredictable increases and decreases. The instability and unpredictability were caused by the following reasons: (1) the consumption level of the society, (2) the weather and farmland, (3) the quality of agricultural products, etc. Accordingly, Indonesia needs to improve the productivity and quality of agricultural products in order to compete with other countries.
