Abstract

Vocabulary is a list of words for a particular language or a list or a set of words that individual speakers of a language might use. Vocabulary is the biggest component of any language course. Students must master vocabulary in order to make their English fluent. However, students will find difficulties in learning English if they do not know strategies in learning vocabulary. The research purposes were: 1) to know the students’ strategies in learning vocabulary, and 2) to know the dominant strategies used by junior high school students at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Malang. In this study the writer used descriptive qualitative design. The population of this study was students at Second year of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Malang ; class A, B, and C; consisting of 94 students. In collecting the data, the writer used open questionnaire as instrument. The result of the data analysis showed that many students employed more than one strategies in learning vocabulary. Those strategies were using dictionary, listening to the music, watching movie or English TV program, practicing with other, memorizing, taking a notes, reading English books, translating word, asking someone, attending course. The most dominant strategy was using dictionary. There were about 68 students. On the other hand, the least strategies was attending course, there were about 6 students. So, the writer suggests the students learn other strategies to get more vocabularies.
