Abstract

Commercial is an effective and efficient communicating, functioned to reveal an idea or product. Symbols used generally able to give stimulus, even effect to everyone who see that, so that it would influence someone’s thought. From above statement, the researcher interested to find figure about symbols formed through tactical commercial in printed media. The writer chose tactical commercial object since the commercial full of meaning whether verbal or nonverbal. Printed media choosing by the researcher since printed media considered able to be reached by all people, cheap, flexible, reliable to be read, the reader would be more selective in reading and able to state interesting figure or writing by various words. The research purpose was to find out more about verbal and nonverbal symbols in tactical commercial in printed media, especially from semiotic perspective. The problems to be solved here was about symbol’s form and function in tactical commercials. Generally, the research aimed to represent: (1) nonverbal and verbal symbols and (2) function of verbal and nonverbal symbols. The research data consisted of verbal symbol in form of sentences and nonverbal symbol in form of figure in tactical commercial. Data source in this research was printed media. Printed media used in this research was Jawa Pos newspaper from May 1st to 31st 2010. In Jawa Pos May 2010 edition, there were various tactical commercial, so this research would be focused on three commercials, they were: (1) banking saving commercial and credit card; (2) cellular pohone commercial and (3) Telkomsel commercial. So, data source in this research consisted of 21 tactical commercials. From the research analysis, there could be concluded that: (1) symbols used was tactical commercial in Jawa Pos May 2010 edition, they were: nonverbal symbol, consisted of figure with communication message, and verbal symbol consisted of words in building certain meaning. Symbols form used in tactical commercial of Jawa Pos May 2010 edition contained denotative and connotative meaning, and (2) symbols function used in tactical commercial at Jawa Pos newspaper May 2010 edition were: (a) giving information; (b) pursued and influenced; (c) created meaning; (d) satisfied needs; and (e) as communication tools.
