Abstract
Reading is one of the important skills because without reading the language learners can not progress themselves. In fact, many students have difficulties in learning reading. There are many factors and problems that affect the students in learning reading. The researcher wanted to know the strategies employed by the eighth students of kelas unggulan in learning reading. The purposes of this study were to know the kinds of learning strategies in reading comprehension, the most learning strategies in reading comprehension, and the fewest learning strategies in reading comprehension are employed by the eighth grade students of kelas unggulan at SMPN 06 Malang. This study used qualitative research design because the researcher wanted to discribe in details from the reality based on the perception of the eighth grade students of kelas unggulan in learning reading. The subject of study was class VIII.5 students as kelas unggulan at SMPN 6 Malang with the total number of subject was 43 students. The instrument used is questionnaire. After collecting and analyzing data, the researcher found that the average percentages of learning strategies in reading comprehension employed by eighth grade students of kelas unggulan are 66,7% for cognitive strategies, 67,2% for metacognitive strategies, 66,9% for memoryrelated strategies, 65,1% for compensation strategies, 73,7% for affective strategies, and 69% for social strategies. Meanwhile, the researcher found the most dominant learning strategy in reading comprehension employed by students was affective strategies and the fewest learning strategy in reading comprehension employed by students was compensation strategies. Finally, the eighth grade students of kelas unggulan at SMPN 6 Malang employed various strategies to support their reading. Almost all of the students relized the importance of learning strategies in their learning proficiency. They employed learning strategy in reading comprehension that is appropriate with them
