Abstract

Learning succeed has close relationship with teacher ability to chose approach and method. The students would understand the material easier when facilitated by fit learning approach. One method optimize students in learning was learning with Snowball Throwing method. Snowball Throwing trained students’ readiness by paying attention each other. The research aimed to describe the application of learning method Snowball Throwing in its effort to increase the understanding in fraction material of Grade VII SMP MUhammadiyah I Junior High of Malang year 2008/2009. The research used was qualitative with class action research. The subject was VII A Grade SMP Muhammadiyah I Junior High of Malang. Data collection technique used in this research were test and observation. Test was used to find out students’ comprehension in concluding math exam and learning completeness, and observation was used to observe the teacher and students’ activities along the learning process existed. The research showed that Snowball Throwing method application in learning could overcome the problem of students in VII A Grade SMP Muhammadiyah I Junior High School of Malang year 2008/2009, where the students able to understand material given by the teacher, especially in fraction. It could be seen by the combination of students’ comprehension with the final test. In cycle I, there found average score 54,52 with 53.33% percentage, while in cycle II, there was increased into 71,80 with 86,67% percentage. Data analysis result in cycle II has reached Minimum learning completeness standard stated by the school. According to data analysis from both cycles, the action in cycle II showed increasing compared with cycle I. It showed that learning method application of Snowball Throwing could increase fraction material comprehension for students in VII A grade SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Malang academic year 2008/2009.
