Abstract

In teaching reading, the problems that often appear can make the teacher get difficulty to teach effectively. That certainly becomes the teacher’s work in helping the student’s mastery in reading. Therefore, this study emphasizes on investigating non linguistic problems of teaching reading and causes of the problems. The problems concern with teacher’s qualification, time portion of reading skill a week, selecting material, number of students, usage of method, etc. This research employs descriptive qualitative design which only identifies and describes data about the non linguistic problems in teaching reading and causes of the problems. Research subject is used, because the findings of this study is not intended to generalize to the whole population of research. Thus, the subjects of this research are four first year English teachers of all Junior High Schools in Kecamatan Guluk-guluk, Kabupaten Sumenep, Madura. Moreover, to gather the data, the researcher applies an insrument, unstructured interview, because this interview is more informal and free questioning to the subjects. It can gain the subjects’ views, attitudes, belief, and other formations. The researcher finds out problems concerning with non linguistic problems in teaching reading. They are: (1) the students who are difficult to understand the text, the inappropriate text, and the uninteresting text; (2) three first year English teachers having big class; (3) three English teachers getting failed in applying method; (4) only one Junior High School providing less time portion for reading skill a week; and (5) one English teacher sometimes feeling disappointed and almost desperate in facing the students.
