Abstract

Literature is one of leading ways in which the human race grapples with and interprets reality. Literature is an expression of life. The authors are free to use words through his imagination in his works, in offering the readers about the description of the life that frequently occurs in the human life. This study takes Sidney Sheldon’s novel “Tell Me Your Dreams”. This novel is very interesting because it belongs to psychological novel. The writer of this thesis analyzed the background of dissociative disorders on Ashley Patterson, kind of dissociative disorders faced by Ashley Patterson and the effect of dissociative disorders faced by Ashley Patterson in “Tell Me Your Dreams” novel by Sidney Sheldon. This study applied a descriptive research design. The approach that is used is the objective approach. The object of this study is the whole events in the forms of paragraph, sentences, and the dialogues related to the conflict faced by the main character. The result of the study shows that (1) the factor that causes dissociative disorders faced by Ashley Patterson in “Tell Me Your Dreams” novel by Sidney Sheldon was that her father raped her every night when she was a child. She told her mother about her father’s attitude but her mother did not believe in Ashley. Then Ashley never told any one again, (2) kind of Ashley dissociative disorders in “Tell Me Your Dreams” novel by Sidney Sheldon was dissociative identity disorder, (3) the effect of dissociative disorder faced by Ashley in “Tell Me Your Dreams” novel by Sidney Sheldon was that she felt someone followed her, lost her job, lost her time, wanted to suicide, and became a murderer.
