Abstract

SMA Negeri 1 Tulungagung in its attempt to improve the Speaking ability of the students has implemented as special English program, which aims at developing students’ proficiency, especially Speaking, by creating English Speaking community at school. This Speaking program is regarded as an effective way to reach excellence in the English program, which in the long run, will be an advantage for SMA Negeri 1 Tulungagung as private school in its attempt to attract Junior High School graduates to enter this institution. This study is purposed to describe the teacher’s techniques, methods, problems, and solutions in teaching Speaking at SMA Negeri 1 Tulunggagung. In this study the writer used descriptive qualitative case study because most case studies arise endeavors to solve problems in teaching speaking at SMA Negeri 1 Tulungagung . The teacher used students and teachers as the subjects of study. There decided to use stratified random sampling because there was no significant difference in students perception toward the Speaking program among different class and took 20% all of population as the sample in this research. There were 66 students, 1 teacher of English. The population this research is all of the second, third year students and the teacher in SMA Negeri 1 Tulunggagung. There are four (4) classes of second, third years totally 336 students each of the class. While, they are 4 English teachers. The writer analyzed the data using interview, questionnaire, observation as the instruments. To analyze the answer for the students’ responses to the questioner and interview for teachers. Based on the result, the writer found that the teachers used varieties techniques (discussion, games, dialogue) and effective method in teaching Speaking is eclectic method which emphasizes on the meaningful approach and its boredom. Next, she found the teachers and students problems in implementing the speaking program. For Example; some problems are students low level of capability in composing sentences. These problems can be solved creatively by conducting on day in English, recitation 5 to 10 words a day. In the fact, the implementation of teaching Speaking used by the teacher were low those techniques don’t make students interesting and motivation.
