Abstract

This thesis is intended to analyze the code switching demonstrated by the employees of Kusuma Agro Tourism Batu Malang since the writer finds that they can speak more than one language. This is a sociolinguistic study which studies the ways of the employees of Kusuma Agro Tourism Batu Malang use language while they are working. The writer takes this title because she finds the phenomena that employees of Kusuma Agro Tourism Batu Malang often do code switching, in their daily work. This thesis tries to find out and to identify the code switching and the individual factors that are responsible for the code switching demonstrated by the employees of Kusuma Agro Tourism Batu Malang. This study is descriptive because it relates to the problem of how to describe what goes on the linguistic level when the employees of Kusuma Agro Tourism Batu Malang produce code switching while they are working. It is also qualitative because the data are in the form of text and do not concern any numbers. To collect the data, the writer records the utterances of the employees while they are working, then transcribes them from the noted or cassette and identifies them based on their forms. The result of this study reveals that the employees of Kusuma Agro Tourism Batu Malang often use code switching which are; Indonesian – English code switching, Indonesian – Javanese code switching and Javanese – English code switching and the individual factors which include individual preference and skill.
