Abstract

One of the education problems in Indonesia is that Indonesian students have low reading interest. The low reading interest may have an impact on the education quality. Comparing to other universities in Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, Indonesian education quality positioned at almost the lowest rank. Considering that reading is primary need in education, there is no doubt that students’ reading interest plays an important role in students’ achievement. Thus, this research was conducted to know the reading interest of English Department students of University of Muhammadiyah Malang. In doing the research, the researcher used descriptive research designed with qualitative approach. On April 24th - 26th 2006, 43 students who belonged to the sixth semester were distributed questionnaires. The questionnaires consisted of 25 items. The result of the answer in form of scores was analyzed to answer the statement of the problems. It was found that the students’ reading interest was high. The result showed that the mean score was 61.90. It can bee seen from the result that most of the students spent more than 3 hours to read in a day and they also often spent their spare time to read. In their answer, they often read other sources than books and they sometimes looked for other literatures when they still did not understand what they were reading, in order to increase their knowledge about what they read. It was also found that 2.32% of students got score in range 81-100 categorized into very high. 55.81% of them were categorized into high, and the students who were in moderate level were 41.87%
