In this globalization era, English language becomes important thing to be mastered. Besides it is used for communication, as well as to get lot of information in the world because in this era a lot of valuable information spread out by using English. In our educational program, English has been taught in secondary school as compulsory subject. In teaching English, the textbook which is chosen for teaching must have good quality because the textbook has important roles to the success in teaching learning process. So, textbook should be selected carefully before they are used in teaching. Therefore, the writer wants to know the quality of English textbook used for the first year students at MAN Mojosari-Mojokerto published by Balai Pustaka. The purpose of this study is to investigate the quality of the English textbook based on the 2004 English curriculum. The design of this study was descriptive because the writer wanted to describe the general quality of the textbook, such as subject matter, vocabulary and structure, exercises, illustration, and physical appearance aspects. The object of this study are all English textbook used for the first year students at MAN Mojosari-Mojokerto, that is English textbook published by Balai Pustaka. The data were obtained in by sending questionnaire to the respondents, they are all English teachers who used this book. After the data was gotten, then, the writer analyzed and calculated the final score percentage, and the score percentage of each aspects. Next, the writer interpreted them. The findings of this study show that: The final score percentage of the textbook is 77.2%, and it categorized as good. So, the general quality of the textbook is categorized as good. And the qualities of each aspect are: First, the total score percentage of subject matter is 75%, and it is categorized as good. Second, the total score percentage of vocabulary and structure is 77.5%, and it is categorized as good. Third, the total score percentage of exercise is 74.6%, and it is categorized as good. Fourth, the total score percentage of illustration is 80%, and it is categorized as good. Fifth, the total score percentage of physical appearance is 83.3%, and it is categorized as good. From the findings above, the writer concluded that an English textbook published by Balai Pustaka used for first year students at Madrasah Aliyah negeri (MAN) Mojosari-Mojokerto is categorized as good English textbook.
