English as an international language in the world is very important to master. English has an important role for education purpose, especially in Indonesia, since it is considered as the first foreign language that is taught to the student of junior high school, senior high school, even university. In accordance with the curriculum 1994, English can be taught from the elementary school as the local content subject. English is also taught in a special school-a school whose impairments and mental retardation. In Indonesia, it is called SLB (sekolah luar biasa). One of the SLB is for hearing-impaired students. In teaching English to hearing-impaired students the teacher usually faces some problems dealing with the students’ disability of hearing. Based on the description above, the writer tried to search and find out the problems faced by the teacher in teaching English to hearing-impaired students at SMPLB-B Yayasan Pendidikan Tunas Bangsa. In this study, the writer used descriptive research design and the subject of this study was an English teacher at the first grade of hearing-impaired in SMPLB-B Yayasan Pendidikan Tunas Bangsa (YPTB) Malang. The instruments used to collect the data were interview and observation. The finding of the research showed that two kinds of problems were faced by the teacher in teaching English at SMPLB-B Yayasan Pendidikan Tunas Bangsa. They were the problem of students and the problem of material. First, the problems of the students that related to the students’ lack of vocabulary and students’ difficulty in memorizing the English word, the students’ difficulty in spelling and remembering English word and the students’ difficulty to share their problems in understanding the material. The teacher tried to solve problems of students by using pictures to improve vocabulary knowledge, invite the students to teaching group to make communication with students easily. The teacher also repeated the explanation more than one time in order that the students understand the material. The second was the problem of material. In SMPLB-B Yayasan Pendidikan Tunas Bangsa the curriculum was not available. Therefore teacher got problem to find the suitable materials for the students. The teacher should create the material by her self based on the student’s ability and needs.
