Abstract

In learning speaking, the student hope to be active in speaking in the classroom, teaching speaking can be active in classroom if instructors use various strategies such as; telling story, dialogue, debate, and discussion. Discussion often used as classroom activity. It is also used in language learning. The technique is very useful for students in participating and developing speaking skills. Not only this case, but also students can learn about the material discussed. Cooperative learning in a group is success when they meet used heterogeneous group. The purposes of this study are to know the cooperative learning method used by teachers in speaking class in English Department of Muhammadiyah University in Malang and to know the implementation of the cooperative learning method used by the teachers in teaching speaking. In conducting this study, the researcher needs an appropriate method to investigate the phenomenon. She uses descriptive method to conduct her study. Descriptive method is regarded as a procedure of problem solving from phenomenon by giving the description of current condition of fact, Nawawi (1994). The population in this study are English Specific Purpose (ESP) lecturer who teach speaking class in academic year 2004/2005 of English Department in Muhammadiyah University in Malang. The researcher took one of ESP lectures that teach Speaking Class in second semester, especially in class 2D. Which selected using random sampling technique. The instrument utilized to collect the data: interview and observation. In learning speaking class, the lecturer used cooperative learning method. In cooperative learning method, the lecturer combined all of elements. Besides he mad a group work (two or more students). In teaching the lecturer used complete and efficient media too. The researcher found three cooperative learning methods used by the lecturer in speaking class, they are: individual and group accountability, Face to face interaction, and Group processing of refection. In the implementation of cooperative learning, he still feels difficult to apply it in class, because he needs much time to implement all elements of this method
