Abstract

Every country has their own culture that might be different from one another. It is not wondering if newcomers get culture shocks at the first time they enter new culture. This study will explore more about culture shocks in entering new culture and new environment. The object of this study is “Lost in Translation” movie. The researcher tries to describe the culture shocks experienced by Bob Harris in “Lost in Translation” movie using descriptive qualitative research design. The researcher found that “Lost in Translation” movie reflects how someone named Bob Harris, who did not have a cultural awareness, came into new culture and new environment. As the result, he got culture shocks in adjusting himself with everything new such as the custom of society, language, and food. Not only culture shocks but he also got symptom of culture shocks such as: sadness, loneliness, allergies of food, and longing for his family. As for him, living in new culture and new environment is such a nightmare. He found that he could not eliminate culture shocks in a short time. It can be concluded that entering new culture and new environment is not easy, people should have the cultural awareness to face different culture, custom, and society before they enter new culture and new environment. By conducting this research, the researcher suggests that people must learn well about the cultural awareness before they enter new culture and new environment. The cultural awareness is very helpful for people in avoiding misunderstanding and misinterpretation with new culture and new environment. Hopefully it will give new idea and knowledge about culture shocks in a second culture.
