English is an international language; it means that it is used for communication among people in the world. Meanwhile, vocabulary is one of the fundamental factors that make it possible for a person to speak the language in a communicative way. Thus, vocabulary is an important aspect needed in studying the foreign language. There are some techniques that must be considered by the teacher in teaching English vocabulary. This study aims to know the techniques that are used by the teacher to teach English vocabulary at Out of School Education Kejar Paket B Dau Malang, and to know the students’ responses toward the techniques used by the teacher to teach English vocabulary at Out of School Kejar Paket B Dau Malang. This study is descriptive qualitative research design because the writer wants to present the facts related to the techniques used and the students’ responses toward those techniques. The data of this study were collected by distributing the questionnaire, interviewing the teacher, and observing the class. The subjects of this study are an English teacher and students of the second year of Out of School Education Kejar Paket B Dau Malang. The result of this study shows that the techniques used by the teacher to teach English vocabulary were synonymy and definition, contrasts and opposites, translation, asking others, visuals, and the use of illustrative situation. The technique often used by the teacher to teach English vocabulary was translation technique because the students were interested in this technique and it is easier than others technique. Students’ responses toward those techniques were almost similar. Most of them gave positive response to those techniques. It could be seen that all of the respondents (9 respondents or 100%) were interested in synonymy and definition, translation, and asking others. While, 1 respondent who was not interested in contrast and opposites technique and the others (8 respondents) were interested in this technique. The data from class observation also showed that the students were interested in visual and illustrative situation. It can be identified from the students’ participation in the class. They were very enthusiastic and active in the class when the teacher used those techniques. Finally, the writer suggested that the teacher must be creative in using techniques of teaching, creating the teaching media, and choosing the materials that are familiar with the students. It is also suggested to UPT of Out of School Education Kejar Paket B to provide teaching media.
