Abstract

Listening is very important in the process of communicating with other people. It is the process of receiving, constructing meaning from, and responding to spoken and/or nonverbal messages. Listening skills allow someone to make sense of and understand what another person is saying. In other words, listening skills allow people to participate actively as a student sitting in a lecture or as a participant in a conversation.
The problem formulation of this research is: What techniques do the English Teacher use to improve students’ listening skills, and how are the techniques implemented to improve students’ listening skills in the classroom, what are the obstacles faced by two English teachers in implementing techniques for listening skills.
This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study research strategy to investigate the listening teaching techniques utilized by English teachers at MAN 4 Banjar, located in Kalimantan Selatan. The research participants consist of two English teachers who possess certification and have more than three years of teaching experience. The data collection method involves interviews and observation.
The findings of this study found the teaching technique in listening used by teachers in MAN 4 Banjar were listening and repeating, and listening to music. The procedure of listening and repeating the first greeting, explaining the topic, reading the story, student repeat. For listening, greeting first, explaining the lesson, and students listening to music.
The problems faced in teaching listening are students talking to their friends, less focus, and being sleepy in class.
