Abstract

Film as a medium of mass communication that is capable of audio and visual re­construct and present a reality as well as a variety of phenomena through the signs and all the structures that build a movie. The phenomenon of the Lesbian and Transsexual always interesting for the thorough and studied. The film Boys Do not Cry is one of the film in which one part in it tells the story of lesbian love and conflict, and optimism in life. Lesbian identity crisis that ultimately classified into transsexual in this movie the main character and the great media attention these days about the Lesbian and Transsexual not only the subject, but also as an object of commodity or marginalization of lesbian and transsexual in the film, making researchers interested in conducting this research. This study seeks to determine the identity crisis of a Lesbian interpreted through signs in the movie Boys Do not Cry. This research is oriented to personal communication as the production and generation of meaning. Search for meaning in the movie should use the appropriate method, which will help researchers uncover the hidden meaning behind the signs in a movie. Because the film is constructed by the signs, then the meaning is deemed appropriate by using semiotic methods. This study uses Roland Barthes' semiotic method for Roland Barthes on the map marks a sign of connotative and denotative also a myth as pertandaan mode, full deemed appropriate to examine audio and visual in the film Boys Do not Cry. The process of meaning in the sign through connotative and denotative sign as a process of semiosis. Analysis of the sign would lead to proving that every sign is determined by how the subject and object can be interpreted simultaneously and give the impression and message. Using the method of semiotics in the study is basically a qualitative methodology­intrepetatif. With the aim to determine the representation of lesbian identity crisis, then the plots were chosen that gave rise to the signs that contain Lesbian identity crisis. Making of two important elements in the film, namely audio (including dialogue / monologue / voice over, musical illustrations, sound effects) and visual (including shooting techniques, lighting, visualization, color) will serve as the unit of data analysis. While the data obtained with the technique of documentation from the movie VCD Boss Do not Cry and other data sources related to the research. The process of semiosis in data analysis techniques presented in the form or the map marks Roland Barthes. The results of this study indicate that lesbian identity crisis that is constructed in the film Boys Do not Cry displayed through the representation of the main character of Brandon Teena. Lesbian identity crisis in the film Boys Do not Cry dynamically constructed through the twostructures that make up the audio and visual film. While the meaning of lesbian identity crisis, identified into three, namely referring to elements of the concept of self­identification through the process of developing self­awareness. The process of developing self­awareness gained through three ways, namely mirror self, social and personal self­realization. Brandon mempressentasikan figures mirror themselves as optimistic attitude about the crisis of identity. Where he became the subject and the object of which he is subject as a major actor and object of development itself. Personal Social displayed through rejection, insult, permaluan, rape, beating and murder of Brandon experienced by Tom and John. That is also shown in relation to Lana who loves what they are and Candance, Lana's mother. Self­realization is shown from the everyday Brandon Brandon performed. Self­realization is not happen dramatically, but because of habit.
