As we know English is used for communication all over the world. It is very important for us to master it. Many researchers said that the result of teaching and learning English is considered unsatisfactory. It proved by most the students who have graduated from senior high school still have less ability in English. They can not rely on their ability whenever it is required. We ought to consider the hindrance that cause this condition is dealing with the using of audiovisual aids. Many teachers of English hardly use audiovisual aids in teaching learning process. In conducting this study, the writer uses descriptive research design to know the use of audiovisual aids in teaching English, teacher’s problem in using audiovisual aids, and how the teacher solves those problems. The subject of the study is a teacher of English at SMU Shalahudin Malang. He is the only teacher of English at this school who teaches in the third classes. The instruments that are used in this study are observation and interview. Observation was used to know the audiovisual aids in teaching English. Interview was used to collect the data about the use of audiovisual aids, the problems encountered by the teacher of English in using audiovisual aids and how the teacher solves those problems. The result of this study shows that the teacher of English in SMU Shalahudin Malang used two kinds of audiovisual aids in teaching English. They are multimedia projector (LCD) and videodisc sets (CD). Multimedia projector is one of the audiovisual aids, which is hardly used. From this result, it can be seen that the use of audiovisual aids in this school is categorized as medium. The teacher problems dealing with the audiovisual aids are: (1) the skill in using audiovisual aids to make the audiovisual aids more interesting for students, (2) time allotment in preparing audiovisual aids especially multimedia projector (LCD), (3) evaluation of audiovisual aids, and (4) fund allocation to provide audiovisual aids. The problem can be overcome by cooperation among the staff institution and teacher of English; by attending some course, and also the teacher improve and develop the use of audiovisual aids both qualities, especially in teaching English.
