Abstract

One of the teacher’s ways in teaching English is by using media. Media brings messages or information that has education objective. It also makes the situations of class more alive, the students feel interested and more active in the class activities because media brings new educational strategies and helps to change the content of science education. So, it can improve the student’s understanding, comprehension to the material. On the other hand, not all kinds of media can be used effectively in class. So the teachers have to realize the most appropriate media for their students. Media must be in line with the materials or topics and students’ needs. Thus, teacher need to know the students’ perception before deciding what the most suitable media is, in order to make then student comprehend the material in teaching learning process. This study generally aimed to identify four statements problems, they are1) how is the students’ perception on using visual media in teaching English?, 2) how is the students’ perception on using audio media in teaching English?, 3) how is the students’ perception on using audio­visual media in teaching English?. The research design used in this study was descriptive quantitative. It was intended to describe the students’ perception on using media in teaching English. The writer used the first year students of SMK 4 GRAFIKA Malang as population. The instruments used in this study were questionnaire and observation. Questionnaire was given to the students and Observation was done to the students. There were four steps in collecting and analyzing the data. The first, the researcher did the observation to the school and students. Second, the researcher distributed questionnaire in rating scale to the students. Third, the researcher classified and analyzed the information of observation and questionnaire. Fourth, the researcher made conclusion that had been analyzed. The result of the studying shows that there were some media used by teachers were radio, LCD, computer, card and games. The students’ perception on using overall media in teaching English was good. It was shown by the total mean 81.44%. The students’ perception on using visual media in teaching English was good. It was shown by the total mean 78.69%. The students’ perception on using audio media in teaching English was good. It was shown by the total mean 78.85%. The students’ perception on using audio­visual media in teaching English was good. It was shown by the total mean 87.58%.
