Abstract

Teaching English for elementary school is different from teaching English to junior or senior high school. Teaching English for elementary school needed specific strategies and techniques in teaching young learners especially for those who teach English. The purposes of this study are to know the teaching strategies used by the teacher in giving motivation to the students and the implementation of those strategies in classroom activity. In this study, the writer used descriptive qualitative research. The subject of this study was the English teacher at SDN VI Batur. The instruments used to collect the data were observation and interview. After analyzing the data, the result of the research showed that the teacher used discovery strategy, imitation and modeling strategy and activity strategy in teaching English. The strategies were used because they were appropriate with children’s way of learning, in which they like to learn through illustration, repetition, and modeling. In discovery strategy, the teacher provided illustration to attract the students’ analytic skill. In explaining the material, the teacher also provided imitation and modeling orally and in written form repeatedly, and then students imitated it as the teacher showed. Singing a song also included in order increasing students’ motivation and interest. The researcher also found that the English teacher used other techniques to motivate their learner, such as: using games, giving reward, and a quiz. The techniques were helped the teacher because she could attract the students’ motivation. However, the strategies used by the teacher were quietly interested and easy to understand by the students, because those strategies gave various ways of teaching. Besides, it also made the classroom condition become more fun and dynamic. In conclusion based of the result above, the teacher should apply those strategies in teaching learning process. In addition the teacher also applies various strategies and use various media to case the students to grape the teaching material.
