Abstract

Teaching and Learning process in Indonesia is usually based on a certain curriculum. Curriculum is not only a set of courses but also all activities and experiences that the students have in school. One basic to curriculum development is syllabus. It is an important document for the teachers because syllabus is a map in teaching and learning process. Therefore, this study is intended to describe the problems of implementing syllabus at SMA Negeri 2 Sampang and the alternative solutions to solve those problems. The study used a descriptive research design because the researcher wanted to describe the current status of problem. The current status of problem in this research was the problems of implementing syllabus faced by the English teachers and the alternative solutions of those problems at SMA Negeri 2 Sampang. The research took three English teachers at SMA Negeri 2 Sampang as the research subjects. One teacher was (06070) who taught the first grade students. And the other teachers were (06071) and (06072) who taught the second grade students. The instruments that used in this study were documentation, interview, and observation. The result of study showed that the three English teachers had some problems in implementing their own syllabus in teaching and learning process. Those problems were students’ low motivation, the time allotment provided was not enough, the teacher was not clear to explain the material to the students, the facilities were not available well at this school. And those problems were solved by giving motivation to students, asking the students to learn English deeply, choosing some materials which were suitable with students’ ability, repeating the materials, giving homework or assignments for the students to increase their English ability, using tape recorder to present listening material, using simple English conversation to communicate with the students in teaching learning process, reading the material loudly in listening lesson and taking material in other resources.
