Abstract

Validity and quality of ijtihad results are very determined by the metho­dology that used in. Its including the results of ijtihad belong to Muham­madiyah and NU, that represented by Majlis Tarjih and Lajnah Bahtsul Masail. Starting from the interest to compare the methodology of ijtihad in those both institutions, this thesis be composed. Then the author entitle it, The Methodology of Ijtihad in Muhammadiyah and NU: A Comparison Between Majlis Tarjih and Lajnah Bahtsul Masail. There are three research focuses in this thesis, The methods of ijtihad in Majlis Tarjih and Lajnah Bahtsul Masail; The samenesses and differrences in system and method of ijtihad in Majlis Tarjih and Lajnah Bahtsul Masa­il; and, the factors which cause the various differences in the system and method of ijtihad in Majlis Tarjih and Lajnah Bahtsul Masail. From the research, we conclude that the methodology of ijtihad in Majlis Tarjih takes more from the classical mujtahid, which mentioned in al­ilm ushul al­fiqh, with a limited modifications. While the methodology of ijti­had of Lajnah Bahtsul Masail tends to mazhab oriented. Actually, Majlis Tarjih and Lajnah Bahtsul Masail have similar orientation of ijtihad, both of them believe in ijtihad jama'iy (collective ijtihad) and the same tarjih principles. They also use questionary method to receive and conclude all of religious issues. Their results of ijtihad can be categorized as fatawa. The method of ijtihad can be difference between Majlis Tarjih and Lajnah Bahtsul Masail because the differences of NU and Muhammadiyah’s para­digm about the concept of religion, system of mazhab, even the concept of taqlid and ijtihad it self.
