Abstract

The people dance the characters as their gender themselves. The men dance masculine characteron the other hand women dance feminine character. However, now dancers do not play character. Only act upon their gender but also they change each other. Dancers dance and wear their costume complete with its ornament contradictory with their own sex when they perform on stage. For instance, male dancers dance female character and vice versa. In several cultures cross gender is not accepted since it is not suitable with norms existing in society. The attitude and activities are considered unreasonable also for society or culture. Although it is forbidden, dancers still play cross gender in dancing art performance. The purpose of this research was to find out the factors causing the dancers do cross gender in dancing art performance. This research was a descriptive qualitative reasearch. The data taken by using two methods; i.e. interview, to find out the external and internal factor causing the subjects do cross gender in dancing art performance and BSRI Scale (Bem Sex Role Inventory), to classify the characteristics of subject scheme gender. The subject used was 4 people consisted of 2 male and 2 female. The validity of data was done by comparating the data of interviewing the subjects and data of interviewing their family or close friend.. Based on the research result, it could be concluded that factor causing the subjects do cross gender in in dancing art performance were : internal factor, it was the characteristics of schema gender contrasts to the subjects’ sex, e.g. the males were disposed feminine and the females were disposed masculine. The external factors it was being conditioned, from the direct and vicarious learning process from family and social environment (peers, theachers, society, and social activity). The direct learning process is gained from reinforcement, such as the members of family do not consider the subjects as their gender, the reward of other people for their achievement or applause from the audiences. The vicarious learning process is from imitating model, in this case imitating model who is success in their life.
