Code switching is the usage of two or more languages in the same utterance or conversation. The practice of code switching is often employed by lecturer or teacher, which is used as the medium instruction of teaching and learning process in class.It is one of the ways to convey meaning or the strategies to communicate each other. This study examines the code switching pattern in the utterance or explanation of the psycholinguistics lecturer in teaching at English Department which involves the use code switching as a resource to achieve specific communication’s goals. The study examines about two statements; kinds of code switching which is employed by the psycholinguistics lecturer in his teaching and why psycholinguistics lecturer switch the codes on his teaching instruction. The researcher hopes that this study will give a contribution either theoretically or practically living or developing linguistics or sociolinguistics. Furthermore, the researcher uses the descriptive qualitative research design to explain the occurrence of the usage of code switching in teaching. Moreover, the existence of the code switching here is very essential as one of the strategies to convey the meaning that related to lesson in the class. The subject of the study is the English lecturer who teaches a psycholinguistics subject at seventh semester students of English Department. He teaches in A, B, C, and D classes, and the researcher only chooses one class, that is, B class. Besides, the researcher analyzes the real discourse of the lecturer from his utterance or explanation. The researcher uses two instruments, they are observer-as-participant and unstructured interview (tape recorder). The data are collected on October 26th, and November 16th, 24th, 30th 2005. The researcher finds some kinds of code switching and the reasons from the lecturer. The kinds of code switching are : first, (1) based on the topic changing (situational and metaphorical code switching), (2) based on the scope of setting (intra-sentential, inter-sentential code switching and tag code switching), (3) based on permanent code switching (permanent and temporary code switching), and (4) based on language used (intern and extern code switching). Second, (1) to make clear in explaining the difficult concepts or terms and to make the situation more enjoy in class, (2) it’s the content course subject, (3) code switching is not always used to describe the material only, and (4) to make the class become more flexible. Finally, the study on code switching has important role especially in giving particular emphasis to the materials.
