Abstract

Prominent physical differences among Papua based students often put them into the point of attention in the community. Results of observation indicate that students with Papua origin have been characterized by black skin color, curly frizzy hair, clumsy face expression, and lack of interaction with students from other area. Mrs. Sani, an inhabitant of Tegalgondo Village with Javanese origin, expresses her fear against Papua based students, especially for their face expression and black skin color. She regards Papua students with characters of crude and easy to be angry. Therefore, she takes avoidance against them. However, she never has direct interaction with Papua students. Intercultural communication occurs when two persons or more with different cultural background interact to each other. Different cultures also determine communication behavior. Research has interest to review the communication behavior of Papua based students in their interaction with around community members mostly with Javanese origin. The determination of research subject employs purposive sampling technique. Research uses qualitative approach and subsumes into descriptive type. Data analysis concerns with Miles and Huberman interactive data analysis technique. Data collection techniques include depth interview and observation. Data have been validated with source triangulation. Taking account the results of research and discussion, the communication behavior of Papua based students in their interaction with around community member seems affected by individual character and background of each informant. Community members (Javanese) usually presume the in-group attitude among Papua students as the inhibitor of their interaction with around community members. These results of research can be used as input or additional information for the next author with intention on similar research. The next author should explore the information in further depth to have correspondence with the research of communication behavior.
