Abstract

In everyday life, problem solving is an important skill. Mathematical problem solving is
particularly crucial because it helps children become adept at resolving issues. Mathematical
problem solving can be trained from an early age using activities that children enjoy, one of
which is playing games. The purpose of this study is to determine whether the traditional game
of dakon can improve problem solving skills in early childhood, specifically children aged 5-6
years at TK Islam Istiqomah Malang. The experimental method used in this study is a quasiexperiment. The subjects of this study were 16 children aged 4-6 years. These subjects were
divided into two groups: 8 children in the control group and 8 children in the experimental
group. The instrument used to measure the children’s mathematical problem solving abilities
consisted of 22 story problems. The N-Gain Score test results showed that the average score
in the experimental group was less than 40, indicating that the traditional game of dakon is not
effective in improving mathematical problem solving skills in early childhood. The MannWhitney test results also showed that the p-value for the control and experimental groups was
greater than 0.077. It can be concluded that there is no significant effect on children’s problem
solving skills after being treated with the traditional game of dakon.
