Language is a system of communication by sound, operating through the organs of speech and hearing, among members of a given community, and using vocal symbols possessing arbitrary conventional meanings. Register is language varieties that are used by the people in particular settings and situations. In this study, the writer investigates the registers, the register in social context, and factors that make them use registers. The investigation is done because the writer is interested to find and to know of registers used by the fishermen community in Dharma Tanjung, in social context and also the factors that make used them that differ from another fishermen’s area. The writer hopes that the result of the study can give contribution to the teacher, students, and the people who study Sociolinguistics. In addition, it is expected to give contribution to the sociolinguistics, linguistics and also Maduranese language development. In this study, the writer used a descriptive qualitative design. It was used to describe and interpret the registers used by the fishermen in Dharma Tanjung, the register in social context, and also factors that make the fishermen use those registers. The subject of this study was part of the fishermen in Dharma Tanjung. The informants taken from fishermen community were 10 persons. To collect the data, the writer used interview and observation. In the observation, the writer observed the dialogues occurred among the fishermen in Dharma Tanjung. To analyze the data, the writer used several steps as follows: 1) Identifying and classifying the data of fishermen’s registers, 2) Analyzing the registers based on the data obtained from the informants, 3) Arranging the data in the form of table, 4) Drawing conclusion based on the data. The result of this study shows that from 70 registers used by the fishermen community, there are 12 registers that are known by Maduranese community and also different meaning and purposes. Finally, the writer suggests that this study will encourage for the teacher, students and the other researcher to conduct the better research, especially in Linguistic and Sociolinguistics course.
