Abstract

As a part of product news, photo journalism is one of study in communication science. In news product, photo journalism is an important part in form media or cyber media. And in the end of that photo journalism has work in journalism in visual form to deliver massage to the society. Kompas Daily newspaper concern that photo journalism is a serious part. There is a balance between photo journalism and journalism product in national newspaper. And reward or that work, publish book picture “MATA HATI” is a summary of the best picture from journalist in year 1965-2007. The book gives a picture of social in society. This book full of social massage, and show a correlation between picture or photo journalism especially in social massage. Because a lot of social massage in this book a researcher interest to know more about what kind of social massage in this book. And to answer that question, researcher use content analysis. Content analysis is research method and communication analysis with systematic system, objective and quantitative to know the variable. The important one in content analysis is categorization. There are 6 categories according the researcher in MATA HATI book, there is education, healthy, criminal, poor, conflict and disaster. In coding process, each picture had analysis in one categories and move in to coding table. Result of the research by the researcher has test by coder that consist of two people. And reliability result show objectivity between researcher and coder. Reliability test has purpose that result of the research is objective identifying and categorization also reliable identifying. According to coding show, social massage in MATA HATI book is the larges number which 48 pictures or 36, 65% and another categories are far from first percentage, follow by conflict category 35 pictures (26, 72%), criminal category 18 pictures or (13, 174%), healthy and poor category 11 pictures or (8, 4%) and education 8 pictures or (6, 1%) Frequency in disaster categories is the most dominant than the other categories, it show that this book concern to show disaster as a social problem. Social problem here shown condition after disaster or effect of disaster, such as damage, losing something or people they loved and etc. beside that MATA HATI book show photo journalism about social event, and in psychology it calls pro social. These events shows by event such help each other, evacuation and giving (food and cloth). This book has purpose to the society from pictures, those pictures as remembering. And course remembering not for survivors and the victims only, but also for another society that survive from that disaster, because basic of this pictures are giving massage for survivors society. According of the research above, researcher advice that, frequency in educational category or poor category larger than disaster category. Beside that, researcher advice publish MATA HATI revision edition in simple form and fix an error in typing of caption, title and prolog.
